Corporate Wellness on a Small Budget

Corporate Wellness on a Small Budget

Corporate Wellness Programs are a beneficial investment to large and small companies. Wellness programs increase employee retention, employee productivity, while reducing illness-related absenteeism and decreasing overall medical costs for the employers. Many hiring managers are using wellness programming as a recruiting tool for prospective employees.

Developing a wellness program for your company does not require a large budget and many of your activities can be planned with little to no money. The first step would be to tune into your employees needs and wants through surveys. The surveys can provide valuable information on what issues employees report as being most important in their lives. After the survey, start planning wellness activities. To help plan activities, you can either form a wellness committee or find “fitness champions” from different departments that will encourage peer participation. The wellness committee should be a small group of dedicated individuals, volunteering their time from different departments. When forming the committee, make sure you have the approval from company executives. Pick or plan activities focused around the results of the survey. The wellness committee or fitness champions will aid in creating the programs as well as communicate pertinent information to the rest of the staff. Communication can also be done through emails and newsletters. If the activity is based on physical activity, be sure to make it suitable for all fitness levels. Appropriate physical activity based programs could be run/walking groups after work, or fitness challenges that encourage taking the stairs or wearing a pedometer.

You can also partner with a local personal trainers or companies that specialize in corporate wellness. These individuals can come to the facility for seminars or lunch workouts. You should plan on having 3 to 4 activities a year, each with different themes to encourage participation from all employees. Lastly, plan ahead. Give yourself enough time to properly develop and promote each program.
